In 1999, she served as the Legal Advisor to the General Manager of the Africa and Middle East Resource Investment company (AMERI GROUP).
In 2001, Abiola took the leap into the banking and financial industry, joining Standard Chartered Bank. During her six-year stint, Abiola held various positions, including Head of Legal Affairs and Company Secretary of the bank’s subsidiary company in Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited. She later became the bank’s Head of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs for West Africa, overseeing the bank’s regulatory compliance functions in Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Sierra Leone.
After her outstanding performance at Standard Chartered Bank, Abiola Bawuah moved to Zenith Bank Ghana as Executive Director responsible for Corporate Banking and Business Development, and later as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Under her sterling leadership, Zenith Bank’s business grew exponentially, and the bank received numerous accolades, including the Best Company in Corporate Social Responsibility, the Best Corporate Bank, and the Best Client Service Bank.
